Frequently Asked Mystery Shopper Questions

What is a mystery shopper.

A mystery shopper is someone who poses as an ordinary customer while evaluating the customer service standards of a company or organisation. Mystery shopping assignments can take various forms, such as phone calls, emails, website surveys, in-person visits, or even home visits.  If you’re curious about the opportunities available, sign up with us and explore our Available Assignments page to learn more.

What qualities do you look for in a mystery shopper.

We value mystery shoppers who:

  • Demonstrate strong spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.
  • Write detailed, clear narratives explaining survey responses.
  • Submit reports promptly and on time.
  • Maintain open communication with MCE staff about due dates, earning positive notes in their profile to enhance future assignment opportunities.

Repeated cancellations or failure to respond to MCE staff communication may result in ineligibility for future mystery shopping assignments.

How does mystery shopping work.

Once registered, you’ll receive an email with your login details—check your spam folder if you don’t see it right away. Log in anytime to browse available mystery shopper assignments in your area. You’ll also get email notifications when new shops are posted nearby.

If a shop interests you, request it online quickly, as assignments are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Once assigned, review the shop guidelines and survey before visiting, ensuring completion by the due date. After submitting your report, our editors review it before sending it to the client. Payments are made monthly for shops completed the previous month.

Can I become a full time mystery shopper.

No, most mystery shopping opportunities are part-time and highly flexible, allowing you to select assignments that suit your schedule. For most people, mystery shopping serves as a side gig or a way to supplement their regular income, rather than being their primary source of earnings.

Most of our mystery shopping assignments are in the UK, but we occasionally have opportunities overseas, particularly in the Republic of Ireland. Keep your email notifications on to stay updated on available assignments in your area.

How many mystery shopping assignments are available.

We undertake hundreds of written and video mystery shopping assignments monthly. Many clients request regular mystery shops, so if you’re not selected for an assignment, it may be available again next month.

What questions will I be asked in a mystery shopping report.

As a mystery shopper, you’ll answer questions about your experience, focusing on customer service quality, staff friendliness and store cleanliness etc. Typical queries include how long you waited for assistance, whether employees greeted you promptly, and if they met your needs effectively. Other aspects, such as the store’s organisation, facilities, and overall ambience, may also be covered.

How does a mystery shopper submit their report findings.

After completing a mystery shopping assignment, you’ll submit your results through an online survey. This survey includes questions about your experience, providing valuable insights to help companies improve their sales and service skills.

Why do you need so much personal information for mystery shopping.

Clients often have specific requirements for mystery shoppers, such as height or vehicle type. While providing this information is optional, completing your profile increases your chances of being matched with relevant mystery shopping assignments.

How much does a mystery shopper earn.

Mystery shopping pay varies by client and shop type, typically ranging from £5 to £40 per assignment. You’ll also be reimbursed for any required purchases. Higher-paying shops may involve specific demographics or special equipment, such as video recording.
